Nurses of Color Awards

These awards annually recognize nurses of African descent for their dedicated service and commitment to the health care of the citizens of greater Kansas City. These nurses have demonstrated outstanding devotion and concern for their community. Regardless of the level of professional nursing, we value their contribution in promoting better health and caring for the health of our community.

The Awards

Licensed Practical Nurse

The LPN Award, for significant contributions to the field of practice.

Registered Nurse

The RN Award, open to nurses holding an ADN or a BSN.

Advanced Practice Nurse

For Clinical Nurse Specialists, Nurse Practitioners and Nurse Anesthetists.

Who Can Be Nominated

A nominee must be a nurse of African American descent, must be a Registered Nurse or a Licensed Practical Nurse, and must be actively practising. Nominees should demonstrate active involvement as a nurse in community service and activities, and exemplify professionalism and the caring spirit of nursing.

Nominations are judged for innovation, collaboration, leadership and professionalism, and patient-centered care.

Sitting members of the GKCBNA Board of Directors and members of the Nominations and Awards Committee are not eligible for nomination.

Who Can Nominate

Nurses may nominate one or more individuals, and self-nominations are welcome. Hospitals and healthcare organizations may also submit nominations.

The nominator must submit a letter stating why this nurse deserves recognition, including a list of professional accomplishments from the past year.

Awards are presented at the GKCBNA Award and Scholarship dinner. Winners must be present at the award ceremony.
